The desire to keep warm and to eliminate drafts in an apartment or house in winter is associated not only with the desire to live in comfort and without colds, but also with significant savings in heating costs. Preparation for a long cold period is better to start in the summer, in advance. For this, the owners of wooden windows should check the reliability of the installed glass and the strength of the putty or reinforced glazing beads. Plastic windows do not need additional insulation.

Check the presence and integrity of the putty on the glass or the fit of the glazing beads. If damage is found in the putty, restore it around the entire perimeter of the glass. In the event of a loose fit of glazing beads, evaluate whether it is possible to restore tightness with a lever syringe filled with sealant. Clear silicone will do.

Choose clear silicone and use a syringe to flush all the windows from the inside and outside. Squeeze a thin strip of silicone into the place where the glass and the frame or glazing bead fit and press it with a spatula.

Insulate the ends of the windows and transoms of the opening frames with a sealing cord. Measure the perimeter of the glued sides of the windows and divide the result by 2. The sealant is sold double, by meters. For large crevices, select a seal with a profile in the shape of the letters P or D. For small crevices, a profile in the form of the letter E is suitable. The life of such seals is up to five years.

Divide the seal into a single strip. Wipe the window frame parts thoroughly from dust. Measure the length of the cord necessary for the length, remove the tape protecting the adhesive, and glue the vents around the perimeter. Make sure that the window frame, when closing, presses the seal at a right angle, but does not slip on it.

You can insulate the rest of the windows in more affordable and cheaper ways. For example, foam paddings. Glue foam tape for windows on the cleaned surface of the frames, having previously removed the protective tape. These works can only be carried out in advance, at positive air temperature.

If you are late with window insulation, and the street is cold, use window tape to paste the windows. You can paste over the window wiped from dust and condensate by pre-insulating especially large slots with cotton wool. It is convenient to patch with tape all the cracks between the frames and between the frame and the windowsill.

You can use the oldest and almost free version of window insulation. Prepare a paste. Dilute in a wide bowl cold water with flour to a density of rare sour cream. Prepare strips of paper or chintz. Dip one side of fabric or paper in a paste. Glue all the cracks in the windows with these stripes.

Instead of paste, you can take soap and spread it on one side of the paper or fabric. Glue all the joints on the windows with such stripes. After drying, they will reliably protect the windows from drafts and cold.
