An air ionizer, or aeroionizer, is a device that increases the content of negatively charged particles in the air.

For the first time, the positive effect of negative ions on living organisms was proved by the Russian biophysicist Alexander Chizhevsky. At the beginning of the 1920s, he proposed the use of artificial ionization in agriculture, medicine, etc. In addition, a special device was developed for this purpose by scientists, which was called the lamp or Chizhevsky chandelier. It can be considered the first model of an air ionizer. Only at the end of the 20th century, ionizers for home use began to be in demand, so their mass production began.

All ionizers can be divided into unipolar and bipolar.

In unipolar, there is no positively charged electrode. Consequently, an electrostatic field is created between the negatively charged electrode and the wall, floor or ceiling. The biggest drawback of this ionizer is that the dust around it is also charged, forming ions that are harmful to health. Therefore, such devices are recommended to be installed in areas easily accessible for cleaning. In addition, you should not keep them constantly on and go into the room until the dust settles.

The bipolar ionizer contains two electrodes: with a positive and negative charge. Such a device, if configured correctly, can be left turned on around the clock.

Depending on the functions performed, ionizers are divided into two groups:

1. Aeroionizers, which, in addition to saturating the air with light ions (negative ions), also clean it of dust and bacteria;

2. Devices that ionize, purify and moisturize indoor air.

In addition, instruments can be classified by air ionization. So, thermal, ultraviolet, radium, plasma, electro-effluvial, water and corona ionizers are isolated to enrich the air with light ions.

However, these devices, in addition to benefits, can be harmful to health, especially unipolar. Doctors do not recommend the use of any type of aeroionizer for oncological diseases, bronchial asthma, pneumonia, etc.
