Many believe that Victoria is called a separate variety of strawberries, but the opinion is erroneous. Victoria is nothing but the outdated name for garden strawberries, the breeding technology of which has not changed much for many decades.
Growing Victoria or strawberry is not an easy task, especially for a novice gardener. Moreover, even experienced gardeners sometimes have to sweat a lot to please themselves and their family with a good harvest of this wonderful berry.
Site selection
To grow garden strawberries, you should choose a site located on the sunny side, with the most fertile soil. The best option for growing berries is chernozem or dark gray forest soil. It is possible to grow strawberries on light gray turf soil, however, in this case the yield will not be very rich.
When choosing a site for planting strawberries, you should pay attention to such an indicator as freezing soil. So, if in the winter months of the year on a plot the land freezes up to eight degrees of frost at a depth of up to eighteen centimeters, then it is not recommended to plant strawberries on it, since the berry can freeze.
Strawberries are very afraid of many soil pests, including the eternal enemies of potatoes - Colorado beetles. Therefore, before planting the berry, it is necessary to examine the soil of the site for the presence of insect larvae. If there are any and their density is more than one larva per square meter, soil should be treated with ammonia solution (approximately 2000 liters per hectare).
Processing with this solution should be superficial, but care should be taken to ensure that the liquid penetrates the ground to a depth of twenty centimeters. For the best effect, the soil before irrigation can be processed using a cultivator - an indispensable assistant for each gardener. The result in this case is considered to be good if up to 90% of insect pest larvae die.
