Replacing bicycle pedals can seem like a snap. But this is only true if the cyclist who decides to replace the pedal himself is attentive to this operation and knows the necessary wisdom and subtleties.

Decide which way you will pedal the bicycle. The pedal mount, which is mounted on the connecting rod from the left side of the bicycle, is made with left-hand thread. To unscrew it, turn the key clockwise. If you want to remove the pedal located on the side of the sprocket, that is, on the right, turn the key counterclockwise.

Put the bike on the ground, try to give it the most stable position. Replacing the pedals belongs to the group of work that should be done when placing the bike on both wheels. In some cases, extra effort is required to loosen the pedals slightly. This position of the bike gives you the opportunity to additionally use your own weight, and this can seriously facilitate the work.

Start to take off the pedal. If you want to replace the one that is located on the side of the "star", do this as follows. Turn the connecting rod so that it is in the position corresponding to the position of the hand on the watch dial, indicating the number three. The pedal can have a tetrahedral place for the key on its axis - it is easier to position it this way, but there can be two sides.

Try to set the key as convenient as possible for scrolling. Ideally, if you install the key, you can put it parallel to the connecting rod or slightly higher. So when scrolling counterclockwise, you can use body weight. This work should be done as carefully as possible - when the pedal is loosened, it may suddenly jump off, and then there is a great risk of injury from a chain or connecting rod. When the pedal is loosened, immediately unscrew it, but be careful - do not lose the washer.

On the left side, the pedal must be removed a little differently. Set the connecting rod to the nine-o'clock position. So it is necessary to be able to more effectively use, if necessary, the mass of your body. Start turning the key clockwise, and you should make every effort to loosen the pedal. It can be unscrewed very quickly, as soon as the fastener loosens. If there is a washer, make sure that it is not lost.

Remove dirt and debris from the threaded connection before installing a new pedal. Apply a thin layer of grease - this will reduce the likelihood of corrosion of parts, and in the future the pedal will be easier to remove.

Work on replacing the bicycle pedal must be done as carefully as possible. When the pedal is loosened, the hand may suddenly jump off, and then there is a great risk of injury from a chain or connecting rod.
Useful advice
Start pedaling without using tools - if something goes wrong, you will immediately feel it and protect the thread from damage. Manually spin the pedal as much as you can, then tighten it with the key. Double check the tightness of the tightened pedal - so you will be sure that it will not fly off at the most inopportune moment.
