Pantries used to be found in almost every home. Grandmothers kept in them not only pickles, jams, apples, but also a variety of vegetables. This was their strategic reserve. Unfortunately, today such premises are not provided in houses or apartments. But you can create a pantry with your own hands - in the cellar, on the balcony or in the kitchen. It will help to maintain order in the house and will help you out in case of unexpected arrival of guests.

Requirements for the pantry

A good home pantry does not require a large space for its arrangement. However, it must necessarily meet the following requirements:

- location in the northern part of the apartment or, if you live in a private house, in a special cool dugout (cellar);

- it must be ventilated and dry so that foreign odors appear in it;

- if you equip a pantry in the cellar, it should be whitened shortly before laying vegetables, which will help to prevent the development of a variety of fungal diseases in the storehouse.

To create a pantry, you can use metal or storage racks, boxes, shelves, flexible balcony cellars that look like large bags, containers, thermal boxes and much more.

What vegetables and what should be stored in the pantry?

All root vegetables, melons, horseradish, etc., as well as cabbage and pepper, are suitable for storage in this room. But it is better not to clean the tomatoes, eggplant and other similar vegetables in the pantry, because they cannot lie for a long time - they “disappear”.

Now about how to properly store vegetables in this room. When laying the fruit, it is very important to examine their condition. It is better to throw away rotten, injured, affected by various diseases products. Or, if there is such a desire, cut and eat.

It is best to fill potatoes on a boardwalk with a small slide - no more than 1 meter. Its tubers are recommended to periodically sort out and throw away spoiled.

Cabbage should be stacked either in boxes or on shelves in 2-3 layers. At the same time, its green upper leaves should not be torn off.

Carrots must be placed in boxes with sand previously poured into them. Each new layer of fruit also needs to be sprinkled with sand in a layer of 1-2 cm. In addition, carrots for the winter can be put in small open bags made of polyethylene. In this case, each new layer should be sprinkled with dry sawdust.

Onions and garlic can be stored in nylon tights, bags, wicker or plastic baskets.
