Shale rock is characterized by an almost parallel arrangement of its lamellar or elongated minerals, which have the ability to divide into thin plates. They are divided into crystalline and clay.
Shale
This is a hard clay rock of natural shale build, greenish, reddish, black, dark gray. This type of shale is found in very ancient geological deposits. It is a clay modified and compacted by later metamorphic processes and pressure.
In a homogeneous mass of shale, grains of calcareous spar, veinlets of quartz, and crystals of sulfur pyrite are often given out. Under the microscope, you can also see the rutile needles, mica leaves and less common minerals.
According to the mineralogical composition, physical properties and structure of the shale are distinguished:
- penetrated by pyrites and carbonaceous matter - alum shale;
- rich in carbonaceous matter - drawing slate;
- enriched with silica - grinding shale;
- pricking on long posts - slate;
- slate;
- roofing slate.
In Russia, the most technically useful shale varieties are known in the Olonets province, the Urals, the Caucasus, and Ukraine.
Clay shales are used as slate, roofing and facing material.
Crystal slate
This name was taken common for a group of regionally metamorphosed rocks. They have a complete crystalline structure.
Shale is represented only by dark-colored minerals, or quartz, or feldspars. Crystal shales are used as refractory raw materials, as well as building material.
Application
Slate, or as it is often called, natural slate is a natural material that has been used in construction since the Middle Ages.
