But the sizes of such sheets, commercially available, usually do not meet the standards, so most often do not fit the dimensions of the mattress. And their cost is much higher than usual. Therefore, the housewives try to sew a sheet with an elastic band on their own.
How to sew a sheet on an elastic band
To sew a sheet on an elastic band you will need a fabric that is specifically designed for bedding. Its width should be 2.3-3.0 meters, it can be purchased in stores that sell textile fabrics. In the case when the width of the fabric is less than the size of the mattress, you can sew 2 strips of fabric with a linen seam.
Natural hygroscopic fabrics such as linen, bamboo, and cotton are best suited for sheets. If you like soft fabric, you can take flannel, terry material or cotton knitwear. Moreover, fabric with a stretch will not require an allowance for shrinkage, unlike natural material, which requires an additional 10 centimeters due to the fact that after washing it will certainly sit down.
To sew a sheet on an elastic band you will need:
- sewing machine;
- an elastic band measuring ½ of the perimeter of the mattress;
- fabric the size of a mattress plus 20 centimeters in width and length.
Sewing sheets on an elastic band
Before starting work, natural fabrics must be decatable, that is, soaked in warm water, dried and ironed thoroughly. The pattern itself is best done immediately on the fabric, since it is elementary, with a minimum number of lines. Do not forget about the additional 10 cm on each side - these are allowances for fitting the sides of the mattress and the drawstring for elastic. Matter needs to be swept in the corners to the depth of the mattress. The resulting product should be tried on. If the sheet will correspond to the size of the mattress, then its corners are sewn with a double seam, thus, a kind of cover should be obtained.
