Whitewashing the ceiling is a very troublesome business, but it’s no less troublesome to wash off the whitewash itself. The quality of adhesion of the new finishing material to the base ceiling will depend on how carefully you do this.

1

Lime is washed off using water (soapy) and rags. First, the ceiling is evenly moistened, it is convenient to use a spray gun and leave for several minutes to soften the lime. Check with a spatula, if the coating is peeled off as a paste, then it is time to wash off the whitewash. Take a wide spatula and, applying to the ceiling surface at an acute angle, clean off the old lime. At the same time, check the adhesion of the plaster to the concrete slab. Open all the bubbles, and expand the cracks until the plaster ceases to pour out of them. When you finish the entire ceiling, take a rag with water and wash off the whitewash remaining on the ceiling. You can add ammonia or soda to the water, and then rinse the ceiling again with clean water.

2

When the ceiling dries, plaster all the bumps, after drying, go with a sandpaper and apply a layer of finishing putty on the ceiling surface. Sand and soak the ceiling again with a primer. The old layer has been removed and the ceiling is ready for a decorative coating.

3

With a water emulsion is not so simple. Most often, water-based coatings are not susceptible to water, and washing them off the ceiling can be problematic. If the coating adheres firmly to the ceiling, then it is enough to remove everything that peels off and to expand all the cracks, then fill the defects and cover with a primer. If the ceiling was enameled, then you need to sand the surface, for better adhesion of the new coating to the ceiling. If this option does not suit you, then try sticking newspapers on the ceiling. After drying, the newspapers are stripped from the ceiling together with the emulsion of water.

4

If necessary, use this method to remove paint from the ceiling: moisten it twice with plenty, then arrange a draft. All paint is blistered. It is necessary to act in this case promptly, since the water evaporates quickly and the paint adheres to the surface even more firmly.

5

To remove oil paint from the ceiling, use the old proven method: dilute potash (quicklime) to the density of sour cream, apply it evenly on the paint and wait 12 hours. After that, the lime is removed together with a layer of old paint.
