Sewing curtains is an interesting and creative process. Window decor should fit into the interior of the room. To properly make the curtains, you need to take measurements of the window and calculate the consumption of fabric.

When choosing a style of curtains, pay attention to the shape of the windows, to match the place. You must admit that luxurious tails and frills are out of place in a summer cottage interior, and light chintz does not look among the elegant luxurious furnishings in the Art Nouveau style. If you want to isolate the room from the outside world completely - this is one story, if draperies should hide it from immodest views in part - it is a completely different matter and the choice of model should be different.

Sewing the right curtains, start by calculating the required amount of fabric. To do this, you need to know: the length of the cornice, the size of the window, the length of the curtains, and also take into account the pattern repetition. There is no single formula by which it is possible to calculate the cutoff consumption. The footage is considered for each model and part separately. Take accurate measurements, do not neglect millimeters - one is here, the other is there, but in the end the curtain is skewed, and all the work is wasted.

The amount of fabric depends on the width of the window, the height of the room, on the type of construction and the composition of the material. Natural material is subject to shrinkage, so add 10% to the calculated numbers. First determine the length of the curtains. Floor-length is considered traditional; it is well suited for a living room or bedroom. Short curtains, for a window sill or a little lower, are suitable for the kitchen and bathroom. The length is measured from the cornice to the selected lower point, add another 5 cm to the hem. The width is the sum of the length of the cornice, taking into account the end sides and the coefficient of folds. For curtains, it is 1.5−2, for tulle 2−3.

Taking measurements for sewing Roman or roller blinds, decide how they will be attached - inside or outside the opening. A curtain suspended from the outside allows a lot of light to pass through, but its size can be varied. The width of such a curtain coincides with the length of the cornice plus allowances for processing the side seams, the lower edge should go down a few centimeters below the window sill, add 25-30 cm to the allowances along the upper edge. The lining is made longer, allowances for grooves for rails are taken into account.

A fabric with a pattern needs to be aligned horizontally, this will inevitably affect the costs of matter. Leave a margin so that you can combine rapports, otherwise a mismatch in the pattern will distort the composition.

Immediately buy the required amount of fabric, cuts from different parties may vary in shade.
Useful advice
When cutting, lay the sheet as evenly as possible, do not allow the formation of wrinkles and folds. You can press the canvas around the edges with any heavy object.
