Wood products must be processed, otherwise they will quickly lose their original appearance, begin to rot and collapse. One of the most common finishing methods is varnishing, due to which the wooden surface becomes smooth, shiny, perfectly protected from moisture, dust, and minor mechanical damage. To varnish wood products, you can use a brush, swab, and also using other methods.

Before you start varnishing a wooden surface, carefully process the product, since a transparent varnish will only emphasize all the flaws, scratches and dents. Grind the tree first with a rough and then with a fine sandpaper, remove the pile.

Prime the product with a special compound: drying oil or a thick varnish (you can dilute them with pumice, talc, chalk, tripoli, wood flour, kaolin, starch).

Treat the surface with a pore-filling compound in order to reduce irregularities from the cutting of hollow vessels of the tree. The filler allows you to reduce the consumption of subsequent paints and varnishes, mix it before use and apply it to the product with a swab or spatula, then completely dry.

Choose a suitable varnish for coating. If you need a strong, flexible, atomosphere-resistant film, use nitrocellulose varnishes. Oil varnishes are not so decorative and have a hard gloss. For items used in the kitchen (salt shakers, cutting boards, bread bins) nitrocellulose and alcohol varnishes are suitable. Choose the finishing material depending on your requirements for haze, drying speed, weather resistance, etc.

Apply the first coat of varnish with a cotton swab wrapped in linen cloth, you can drip a little vegetable oil, then the swab will move more easily. For applying varnish, you can also use a wide soft brush. If you varnish a product by varnishing, hold the flooded surface horizontally and rotate the inside. If you are varnishing by dipping the product in varnish, let the varnish drain, then touch up the brush with a brush.

Dry each layer thoroughly for 1 to 2 days (depending on the thickness) and run a fine sandpaper along it along the fibers so that the next layer is leveled and adheres well to the surface. Each subsequent layer put in a different direction.

Apply in this way 3 to 8 coats. Varnish quickly, without stopping, as the coating quickly sets. Remove small irregularities on the surface with a swab dipped in white spirit.

Soak the finished product with hot vegetable oil or natural drying oil (you need to warm them in a water bath). Wait for the first coat to soak and dry, then apply the second and third layers in exactly the same way.
