With a small area of the kitchen and the absence of a basement, the owners often put refrigerators on the balconies. No less common is the operation of the unit in the country in the winter. At the same time, no one wonders if the equipment will work at sub-zero temperatures.

The refrigerator manual says that the minimum operating temperature for the appliance is five degrees heat. Attempts to make the unit work in the wrong place violate the operating conditions and void the warranty.

Beware of the cold!

With a minus, the operation of the refrigerator is difficult for several reasons:

  • malfunctioning thermostat;

  • thickened oil in the cold;

  • deterioration of the rubber of the sealant;

  • difficulty in starting the compressor.

In the absence of heat from the outside, the thermostat switches off for a long time when the internal temperature reaches the installation mark and differential set by the manufacturer. If it is necessary to freeze food, the unit will not work.

In cold weather, the oil thickens quickly, an additional load is placed on the motor. Starting the compressor in this situation is very difficult. As a result, serious damage is possible.

Even after starting, due to a lack of pressure, freon hardly leaves the capacitor. Old models can cope with such a problem, and even then after five minutes. In modern refrigerators, at this temperature, a protective relay is activated for five minutes: the condensation pressure drops to zero.

In freezing weather, a "wet cold" is formed in the working chamber of the unit. It can lead to the complete destruction of mechanisms due to water hammer.

Models of refrigerators with the No Frost system at low temperatures begin to defrost. Ice growths form on the evaporator, leading to breakdowns of the units.

A prolonged exposure to the refrigerator in the cold accelerates the deterioration of the rubber seal.

Conductors are always negatively affected by negative temperature. High risk of equipment failure due to short circuit.
