Starting to varnishing furniture, assess the existing damage, prepare the room for work. Close all surrounding objects and the area on which the cleaning and varnishing of furniture will take place, tightly cover with plastic wrap, securing it with masking tape. The room should be well ventilated. Nevertheless, place restored furniture in places where there is no draft and direct sunlight.

Use a scraper and a steel spatula to remove cracked varnish. Thoroughly rinse the damaged surface of the furniture and remove the remnants of the old varnish using a washing solution. Wash off the old varnish in a circular motion, applying the composition to a rag. Clean the entire surface of furniture from the remnants of varnish using fine sandpaper. The surface should become dull and even. Remove dust from the surface with a brush. Clean the contaminated surface with white spirit applied to the sponge, removing grease stains and dust.

Since it is necessary to varnish furniture, having achieved absolute flatness of the surface, apply a primer for wood on it. Apply primer with a brush to a dry surface. It is advisable to make two layers. After each of them has dried, smooth the surface with fine sandpaper. In order not to spoil the wood texture, run the sandpaper in the direction of the fibers.

Apply varnish in 2-3 layers. After each application, it is necessary to wait until the product has completely dried. You should also carefully examine the surface of the furniture and eliminate all defects by grinding. Coat the furniture with varnish, leading the paint brush in the direction of the fibers.

The effect of deep gloss can be obtained if the last layer is done with liquid varnish and polished with a solution of kerosene. As a finishing touch, remove residual oil solution from the surface of lacquered furniture with a clean rag.

Before varnishing furniture with your own hands, you should determine the color of the surface. Varnishes are widely available for sale, emphasizing the natural structure of wood, as well as giving it dark and light colors.

With self-varnishing of furniture, you can get poisoning. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out work in a respirator and rubber gloves.
