Removing old oil paint is not an easy task. Usually, various chemicals are used for this, and sometimes home-made mixtures. Often they turn out to be of little effect, and the coating has to be removed mechanically.

You will need

  • - wash for oil paint;

  • - caustic soda solution;

  • - rubber gloves;

  • - gauze bandage;

  • - a piece of chalk;

  • - slaked lime;

  • - soda ash;

  • - vinegar;

  • - building hair dryer;

  • - triangular spatula;

  • - a metal brush.

Instruction manual

1

Buy a ready-made wash for oil paint at a hardware store or use a solution of caustic soda (20-25%). If the surface was painted not so long ago, they will cope well with the task. Read the instructions carefully before using the wash. Work with it should be extremely careful, in rubber gloves and a gauze mask.

2

For old coatings, prepare a special paste: mix chalk with hydrated lime (1: 1), carefully pour in a 20% solution of caustic soda, stirring with a wooden stick. The paste is applied to the painted surface for 2-3 hours, after which the paint should be easily removed with a knife. In those places where it remains, the treatment should be repeated. Another recipe: mix soda ash, ground chalk and quicklime (7:25:12), carefully dilute with water. After removing the paint, first wash the surface with water and vinegar, then clean water.

3

You can use the so-called construction hairdryer: the heated paint swells and can easily be removed with a scraper. The disadvantage of this method is that the surface cannot be processed all at once, but only in small fragments. Experts advise: it is better to remove the swollen from wooden surfaces, for example, from furniture, with a triangular spatula - so there is less chance of damaging the base.

4

If all the methods described above did not help, there is only one thing left - mechanical removal of the paint. To do this, you can use the nozzle on the "grinder" - special metal brushes. After removing the paint, the surface is cleaned with large emery paper.

note

Paint stripping pastes should be as thick as regular putties.

The agent, prepared on the basis of caustic soda, can be used several times. It should be stored in tightly closed containers in a cool place.

Useful advice

Old oil paint can not be removed at all: if it holds very tightly, a new coating can be arranged on top of it. For example, tiles on the walls in the bathroom can be laid without removing a layer of paint from them, but only by making frequent notches on it and treating them with a primer beforehand. After that, the tile will perfectly "lie" on any glue and will be held firmly on the walls.
