Making the most diverse carpentry, the master often has to use curved parts. It is not always possible to obtain the desired shape by sawing, since here it is important to ensure the strength of the material and its economy. In such cases, it is necessary to bend the wood at different angles.

You will need

  • - hot water;

  • - open fire;

  • - template;

  • - steel strip;

  • - ammonia water.

Instruction manual

1

Use steaming or heat treatment to bend wooden parts. If the wood is held for several hours under the influence of high temperature and moisture, it is possible to achieve a change in the ductility of the material and bend the workpiece at the required angle.

2

Carefully select the workpieces that you will subsequently bend. Use boards sawed along the fibers for this treatment. Avoid using defective and twisted boards, as well as those blanks that have knots. If materials with damaged fibers are used, the workpiece may crack at the location of the defect.

3

For work, prepare a container of suitable sizes and hot water; for larger parts you will need a wooden box. Smaller small parts in boiling water, and larger ones will have to be placed in a box, bringing a stream of hot steam to it using a pipe.

4

If the original workpiece is made of freshly cut material, heat it over an open fire or in a closed oven. At the same time, do not allow the wood to dry out and char. To do this, it is enough to periodically wet the wood with plenty of water.

5

After pre-processing the part with high temperature or hot water, proceed to the direct bending of the wood. Securely fasten one end of the workpiece, and apply mechanical force to the free end.

6

Use a template to bend large parts. To do this, tie the outer parts of the product together with a steel strip 2-4 mm thick. Bend the part along with the strip to prevent it from cracking. Having bent the workpiece with the strip, fix it and stand until it dries completely.

7

There are special techniques for bending various types of wood. For example, a bamboo trunk bends easily if you simply heat it above an open flame. To bend a sheet of plywood, pre-moisten a lot of the proposed fold with water and warm it on both sides with an iron. Then bend the plywood sheet along the outer layers.

Useful advice

Before bending hardwood blanks, pre-soak the blank in ammonia water for two to three hours.
