You can clean your iron from limescale at home with sachets of citric acid. They are sold in almost all grocery stores. Dilute the sachet of acid in a glass of water and stir. Pour the solution into the iron instead of ordinary water and turn on the appliance by placing it vertically. After heating the iron, turn it off, leaving the steam release function on. This will allow to dissolve the scale and clear all openings from it.

This method of cleaning the iron inside at home is not very fast, so you need to be patient. In addition, it is also not very pleasant, since dirty water with a pungent odor will come out of the device - the remains of pollution. As soon as the bulk of the dirt has passed, wipe the base of the iron with a cloth dampened with vinegar. After that, fill the appliance with ordinary water and warm it up again, having completed the cleaning and having tried it in operation.

The self-cleaning function, which many modern appliances have, also helps to clean the iron from scale at home. To do this, fill it with water to the very top, position it vertically and turn on the heating to maximum power. If the iron is very dirty, it is better to keep it above the sink or any container, as dirty and muddy water with lime residue will come out of it. Some irons have a special “clean” button. Use special tools to clean the iron at home from soot. For example, you can purchase a special pencil in a hardware store. It acts as follows: first, the iron is filled with water and heated, after which the contaminated surface with openings for the exit of steam is treated with a pencil. Also, various liquids are sold in stores that need to be added to the iron before heating. They include chemicals for dissolving scale.

Use caution when handling a heated iron. Do not touch its surface with your hands, including after turning it off. As a rule, the device requires at least 10-15 minutes to cool completely.
Useful advice
To prevent scale build-up and to always keep the iron clean, wipe its underside with a dry and clean cloth after each use. In addition, once or twice a month, you can clean the surface with a sponge with soda, which will corrode a thin layer of accumulated lime.
