Thuja is a genus of perennial plants from the cypress family. Due to the beautiful shape of the crown, the relative undemanding to growing conditions and the variety of varieties, thuja is popular among landscape designers. From this plant hedges and detached groups are formed. Thuja pruning consists in removing damaged branches and, if necessary, in the formation of a crown.

Instruction manual

1

Thuja trimming is recommended in early April or late June. However, to maintain the selected shape of the crown, some varieties of this plant have to be cut once a month from the beginning of summer until the onset of cold weather. Thuja pruning should be done in dry weather.

2

In the spring from a thuja completely remove the damaged branches. At the same time, the thickened crowns of varietal forms of thuja western need to be thinned, cutting off some completely healthy branches to improve air circulation in the crown and reduce the risk of pest infection.

3

To adjust the direction of growth of the tree, you can trim its upper part at the desired height. In this case, you get a thaw, growing in width. To form a dense spherical bush, if a similar form is allowed by the plant variety, cut branches from the arborvitae that differ in length from the bulk of the shoots that make up the crown.

4

With the decorative haircut, which is required to maintain the selected shape of the crown, regularly cut off part of the annual growth with thuja. Stronger pruning can lead to the appearance in the crown of areas with old branches devoid of greenery, which makes the plant lose a significant part of its decorative effect.

5

It may turn out that the plant too often requires crown adjustments due to rapid growth. In this case, reduce the amount of fertilizer applied under the tree.

6

If the plant was not formed in a timely manner, it is worth doing a sanitary pruning during the summer: remove the frozen branches and, if necessary, thinn out the crown.

7

For thuja growing in shaded areas, thinning is not necessary, their crowns are already not dense. If you are thinking about transplanting an adult tree from the shade to a more illuminated area, take care of the safety of the earthen coma surrounding the roots. Young thuja tolerate transplant much better.

8

Treat the trimmed plant with a growth stimulator and feed it. Formative pruning of such a tree should begin next season after the thuja has become stronger.
