There are several types of materials that will successfully replace drywall. Some of them cannot be used in suspended structures, but they are suitable for leveling walls and cladding partitions. The best substitute for drywall consider glass-magnesium sheet.

Drywall is made of gypsum and cardboard, without adding any adhesives, which ensures environmental safety. This compares favorably with other sheet materials, which, if necessary, can be replaced with gypsum plaster.

What can be used instead of drywall?

For cladding structures that are designed to work with drywall, you can use wood chipboards (chipboard). They are great for interior partitions, but for suspended ceilings are too heavy. Plates are fixed in the same way as drywall - on self-tapping screws. Only in the first case, fasteners for metal are used, and in the second - for wood.

Particleboard can be replaced with OSB. This material is more durable and has a different thickness. It can be used for sheathing any structures, including suspended ones. But for this purpose, canvases with a thickness of 4-5 mm can be used. When deciding to replace drywall particleboard and OSB, you need to know that these materials are much more difficult to stain and primer.

Another material that will provide a solid, even surface is tongue-and-groove plates. They are made of gypsum with the addition of astringents and antibacterial substances and are equipped with special recesses and recesses, which allows you to mount the plates, connecting them using the "tongue-groove" method. There are two types of tongue-and-groove plates: solid and hollow. The latter are much stronger than drywall, so they are more preferable for the installation of walls and massive partitions. Another advantage of this material is its high soundproofing properties.

The best material to replace drywall

For the alignment of walls, the installation of partitions and suspended ceilings, the glass-magnesium sheet (LSU) is ideally suited. This finishing material is the best substitute for drywall. It is moisture resistant and durable, fireproof. Magnesium sheets with excellent fire resistance are mounted in rooms where only non-combustible materials can be used. This material is used to finish emergency exits, storage areas for liquid fuel, etc.

Due to the environmental safety of glass-magnesium canvases, they are used to decorate kindergartens, catering units, hospital wards. In terms of flexibility, LSU is similar to drywall. Therefore, from it you can build partitions and ceilings with curly cuts, mount arches. The surface of the sheets is even and smooth, which allows you to produce any finish: stick wallpaper or ceramic tile, paint, plaster.
