The mismatch in shoe sizes is due to the fact that different countries and even different manufacturers measure sizes in different units. According to international standard, the size of the shoe corresponds to the length of the foot from the extreme point of the heel to the extreme point of the longest toe, measured in millimeters or centimeters. Each subsequent size increases by 0.5 cm. But not all manufacturers use this particular marking system.

The European and Russian standards are based on a stroke (English Paris points) equal to 2/3 cm. Each size is increased by one stroke. Children’s shoes are sewn starting from the 14th size, and adult shoes are sewn from the 32nd. The difference lies in the fact that the foot itself is measured in the Russian system, and the insole is 10-15 mm longer than the foot in the European system. Therefore, in the European labeling, all sizes are one unit larger than the Russian ones. Accordingly, men's shoes have the following ratio of domestic and European sizes: 25 (foot length in centimeters) corresponds to 39 (Russian size) and 40 (European size); 25.5 = 39.5 = 40.5; 26 = 40 = 41 etc. Women's sizes represent the following correspondence: 21.5 = 34 = 35; 22 = 34.5 = 35.5; 22.5 = 35 = 36 etc.

There is also an English measurement system. It is based on a third of an inch or barley grain (English barleycorn). Children's sizes go from zero to fourteen, where the length of the foot of the baby is taken as zero. Adults are labeled from one to thirteen. For men’s shoes, this dimension is typical: 25 (foot length in centimeters) corresponds to 39 (Russian size) and 6.5 (English size); 25.5 = 39.5 = 7; 26 = 40 = 7.5 etc. Women's sizes correspond to such measurements: 21.5 = 34 = 3; 22 = 34.5 = 3.5; 22.5 = 35 = 4 etc.

The American metric system is also characterized by a measurement in inches. But American sizes are higher than British. Men's shoes are presented in such sizes: 25 (foot length in centimeters) corresponds to 39 (Russian size) and 7 (US size); 25.5 = 39.5 = 7.5; 26 = 40 = 8 etc. For women's shoes, the following sizes are characteristic: 21.5 = 34 = 5; 22 = 34.5 = 5.5; 22.5 = 35 = 6 etc.

In addition, when choosing shoes, it is important to consider the indicator of fullness of the foot - girth of the foot in the widest forefoot. For Russian products, designations from 1 to 12 with an interval of 4 mm are characteristic. European gradation is indicated in the range from 1 to 8, through 5 mm. In the UK and the USA, the letter of completeness is accepted: A, B, C, D, E, EE, F after 5 mm.
