Overlock is one of the types of sewing machines with a narrow specialization - trimming and processing the edges of the fabric.
It does not replace, but only supplements the sewing machine, performing those operations that the sewing machine cannot perform.

Decide on the number of threads with which the overlock processes the edge. There are several types of overlocks on the market (3-thread, 4-thread, 5-thread) and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

A 3-thread overlock covers the edge with three threads and is mainly used to process the edge of the material. Not suitable for grinding materials, as The 3-thread stitch is not strong enough.

4-thread can work both in 3-thread and in 4-thread mode and is suitable for processing and for grinding products. A 5-thread overlock combines a 4-thread overlock and a flat-seam (sewer) machine. This is convenient if the amount of work is small and you need to save space, in other cases it is more convenient to take two cars separately.

Decide for yourself what materials you will work with.
If you are going to sew knitwear, then the differential feed is necessary, because there will be a need for assembly and stretching of materials.

If you specialize in very thin materials, then you should pay attention to the role (roller) seam. Find out from the sellers which of the overlocks makes the most accurate and narrow role seam, as on some of them this is a problem position.

If there is a need to change the processing width, it is better to consider an overlock with special removable spouts on which a line is formed.

It is worth paying attention to the noise of the device. Noisiness often depends on the balancing of parts and on plastic canopies on the frame. The quieter the overlock works, the more balanced its details and less plastic body kits.

Do not trust doubtful manufacturers, choose well-known brands: Juki, Janome, Jaguar, Merrylock, Bernina, Pfaff, …

All other questions are related to the service. Threading agents greatly facilitate the preparation for work when the thread breaks.
Semi-automatic tension adjusters make threading easier when changing colors.
An additional thread tensioner of the left (lower) looper simplifies the adjustment of the role seam.
A complete knife will be very useful in the package, as they are often dull.

The weight of the overlock should not be less than 8-9 kg., Otherwise, most of the details will be made of plastic. Such an overlock will not last long.
