Choosing a Cactus Pot
The pot in which the cactus will grow until the next transplant should ideally fit its root system. In order to choose the right pot, you need to remove the plant from the old pot and spread its roots to inspect the root system. The roots of different cacti develop in different ways and can be both rare and long, and short and dense.
If the root system has a pronounced main root, the pot for this cactus should be narrow and long. In any pot for cacti, good drainage, not less than 2-3 cm deep, is of great importance. When choosing a pot, you need to take this into account and choose such that there is enough space for drainage, and for the soil, and for the roots. But it is not necessary to greatly exceed the volume occupied by the roots. Excess free space provokes root rot in case of stagnation of moisture and hypothermia.
If the cactus has many roots, and they are mostly uniform, short, then the pot should be chosen wide, shallow. Mostly, such cacti in the process of growth form many children and gradually occupy the entire provided area, growing not so much in height as in width. Such transplant cacti must be divided and thinned, replanting into smaller pots.
